The way to find the right color has little to do with finding the one you want, and more to do with what color your skin likes.
Hair Color PigmentationHair color comes in two distinct ways: by the level and shade. Color levels fall on a scale of one to ten; one being the darkest color like jet-black and ten being the lightest color, like platinum blonde. Within each level are color pigments- eumelanin (black-brown) and pheomelanin (red-brown), which control the shade.
Skin Undertones, Eye Color and Hair Color
Your skin tone also contains these underlying pigments. Those born with blonde hair, have cooler undertones like blue, green, pink or blue-based red. In addition, those born with brown or black hair have warmer, earthy undertones like orange, brown, gold or orange-based red. Your undertone indicates the type of hair color that will look better on you: warm on warm, and cool on cool.
Eye colors also follow the pigment guidelines. Those with eyes that are deep brown, black-brown, gray blue, dark blue or hazel with white, gray or blue flecks would look good with cool tones in their hair. However, if your eyes are golden brown, green, turquoise or hazel with gold or brown flecks you will look best with warm tones in your hair.
