Male vs. Female Pattern Baldness

Hair loss affects almost everyone, but the degree of hair loss and the cause is what differs from one individual to the next. One of the most common conditions that causes hair loss in both men and women is known as, Androgenetic alopecia. Although, both men and women can have alopecia, the pattern of balding looks completely different, hence male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness.

How Does Balding Begin?
Balding and hair loss occurs when the hair follicle shrinks over time, resulting in finer hair until eventually the follicle does not grow new hair. Even though there is no longer hair growing, the follicles remain alive which suggests the potential for new hair to grow with the help of hair restoration treatments.

Androgenetic alopecia can be genetic, a response to unbalanced hormones or a combination of both. Although, there are similarities in the ways that androgenetic alopecia affects men and women, we've highlighted some of the major differences.

Male vs. Female Alopecia: 
In men, androgenetic alopecia is characterized by a specific pattern of receding hairline and thinning on the crown of the head. Often times it progresses to partial or complete baldness. Normally androgenetic alopecia, also called male pattern baldness, is diagnosed based on the appearance and pattern of hair loss.

Androgenetic alopecia usually has a very different effect on women. In female pattern baldness, the hair thins all over the scalp in no particular pattern although it is usually first noticed because of the widening of the center hair part. The front hairline usually remains unaffected. Also unlike male pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia in women rarely leads to total or near total baldness.
The best treatments for hair loss for androgenic alopecia may differ among men and women. Men are typically better candidates for hair transplants because the hormone that affects hair loss usually doesn’t affect hair on the sides and back of the head. Therefore, those areas can be used as donor sites for hair transplants. In women, on the other hand, hair all over the head is unstable because there is no a distinct pattern of hair loss. But, some women are candidates for hair transplants and benefit greatly from that type of treatment. For those who are not hair transplant candidates, there are a number of other options to dramatically slow down the hair loss process and to stimulate strong, healthy hair.

Protein
